North Kirk, Keith:
History:
The North Kirk was opened in 1845 having been built by a group of Non-Intrusionists who previously worshipped in a small church in Land Street. It became a Free Church. In 1900 it became part of the United Free Church and in 1929 joined the Church of Scotland and became known as Keith: North. Newmill Church was united with Keith: North in 1970, Boharm Church in 1983 and Rothiemay came into the union in 2001.
Activities:
The church has a number of halls and meeting rooms as well as the church office which is open five mornings each week. There is a well stocked Christian Book Shop opposite the church in Mid Street selling quality cards, books and stationery. The Kirk Shop is staffed mainly by volunteers and is open Monday to Saturday. The shop and office can be contacted on 01542 886390. There is a wide variety of activities associated with the church, including Guild, youth groups, drama club etc. Contact the Church Office for more information.
Rothiemay Church::
History:
The Church dates from 1807 and was internally remodeled and refitted by A & W Reid, Elgin in 1872. It is "B" listed and is described in Moray District Council's supplementary information to the Statutory Listing as follows:-
"Rectangular Church, pinned dark whinstone front, heavily pointed rubble flanks, contrasting tool pale grey Avochie granite dressings. Round-headed, keystone entrance in E gable (probably similar West entrance blocked by later vestry); 4 large regular round-headed windows light along South elevation, keystoned oculus above. Margined horizontal pane glazing. Bellcote at West gable apex, ball finial at East; local slate roof
"Single storey vestry at W gable.
"Blocked 1st floor gallery entrance at rear below which is re-used and re-set door surround from earlier church with curved step on which stands substantial stone (?) font. Moulded, round-headed door piece with large keystone with carved 'winged soul' ; Carved detailing to base of jambs.
"Interior: remodeled on traditional lay-out with rectangular pulpit in centre of S wall and 5-sided gallery with panelled and arcaded front. Fragment of carved stone (possibly a pediment) dated 1672 and with carved star, stands in entrance porch.
