Information

History:
In 1861 a United Presbyterian congregation was formed for Portknockie and Findochty, its members being seceeders from the Parish Church of Rathven. The church was opened in 1863 with accommodation for 400, at a cost of £500. At that time it was the only church in the town. The most remarkable feature of the church is not its architecture, but its position, being situated on the clifftop overlooking the harbour, the most prominent building in the village. Until the bell was installed in 1887, the congregation was called to worship by the sound of a fog horn. The church came into the Church of Scotland via the unions of 1900 and 1929.

The Village:
Findochty grew around a natural harbour known as Crooked Haven, and expanded as a fishing port in the 18th and 19th centuries. Most of its houses are traditional fishermen's cottages, some of them now used as holiday homes. The harbour is used today by many pleasure craft
